TWENTY-EIGHT

The evening air buzzes with excitement as I navigate the chaotic parking lot of the Starlight cinema. Cars jostle for spaces in the packed lot, but I manage to find a spot.

I still feel terrible for canceling on Joe yesterday, but the day with my mother was everything I had wished it would be. We did all the things she wanted to do and ended the day shopping for a pretty chocolate and emerald blouse and a knee-length skirt for her anniversary. When we parted ways, she hugged me for a long time and told me to stop worrying about her, that she was fine now.

But how can I not worry? No matter how many times she reassures me, there’s always this undercurrent of fear tugging at me. The thought of anything happening to her makes my chest tighten.

I smile to myself, thinking back to a memory from when I was little. We didn’t have much back then. Money was tight, and I knew it, even if she tried to hide it. But on my birthday, she’d always find a way to make the day special. One year, we couldn’t afford a cake, so she baked cookies instead and arranged them into the shape of a butterfly. I was so excited, I didn’t care that it wasn’t a real cake. It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. She even made wings out of construction paper and hung them on the walls, turning our tiny apartment into a fairytale just for me.

Dressed in my favorite blue scuffed jeans and a cream sparkly blouse, and still smiling at the memory, I push through the throng of people.

As I approach the entrance, which is flanked by towering posters advertising the latest blockbuster releases, I spot a couple nearby. They’re lost in their own world, wrapped up in each other’s arms with smiles lighting up their faces. I can’t help but smile at their happiness.

In the carpeted lobby, I inhale the nostalgic scent of freshly popped, buttered popcorn as I search for Joe among the sea of faces. Finally, I spot him near a concession stand, a grin spreading across his face as he holds out a tub of what I know will be caramel popcorn, my favorite.

Smiling back, I make my way over to him until his tall, athletic frame towers over me as he gives me a soft kiss on the lips. Joe’s sandy-blond hair is slightly disheveled, and his eyes sparkle with warmth and excitement. His casual clothes, a simple green T-shirt and a pair of well-worn jeans, add to his easygoing charm. But what I find totally sexy about him—that others might find weird—are his ears. They jut out a bit, giving his face an elfish touch. Some people may think it’s peculiar, but I think it’s that feature that drew me to him when he and his friends walked through the doors of Sunny Side.

After a year of dating, I still can’t say I’m deeply in love with him, but I do love being around him and it feels right being his girlfriend.
